Long Island Kitchens

Kitchens have quickly become the most used room in the house. It's the one room that can easily cost the most to build. It's where family and friends join to enjoy good food and good company. Through out the years V.B. Contracting Inc. has been helping people build kitchens of their dreams. I usually don't get involved with the design process because I am not a design company but I can help you make the right decisions regarding a good design and good work flow. My main purpose is to give you a highly crafted installation. Whether you're sprucing up with a new backsplash and hardware or adding an addition and rebuilding from the ground up kitchens always increase value and comfort. V.B. Contracting Inc. will be there to guide you in the right direction.

Spruce Up:
There are many little things you can do to spruce up your kitchen. Your spruce up
project just like any other project will be dictated by your budget. A small budget?
Here's some options to consider on a small budget.

Paint - Paint should be on every spruce up project. It's inexpensive, anybody can do it
and it freshens up the feel of the kitchen. Painting the ceiling, walls and finish work is a
must. If you have stained finish work you might consider a light sanding and fresh coat
of polyurethane. You can even paint your wood cabinets to give them a new look.

Hardware - Hinges, door knobs, cabinet door knobs, cabinet door handles and
window hardware. These little bits of detail don't cost much but can make a big
impact. They can be custom ordered to meet specific designs also but to help control
costs you should look to buy the in stock items. If you have a budget to get
extravagant hardware you can really get some custom hardware.

Backsplash - A tile or stone backsplash adds more flavor to the over all look of your
kitchen. Depending on the materials you use for a backsplash you can most likely fit it
in your budget. The least expensive backsplash finish would be paint. Maybe give it a
faux finish to help distinguish it from the rest of the walls. Higher end finishes include
stone and tile. You'll be surprised what a fresh backsplash can do to a kitchen. Materials
used on backsplashes can be marble, tumbled marble, granite, travertine, ceramic tile,
porcelain tile, wall tile, floor tile, glass tile, wood, mirror, mica, slate, brick, the choices
can be endless.

Outlets - Changing outlets and switches not only make your kitchen safer but they give
you that new feel. We interact with outlets and switches constantly so you notice the
new outlets everytime you use them. Faulty outlets and switches can be hazardous and
the wrong types of outlets can cause problems also.

Faucet - Changing a faucet is another quick remedy to getting a better kitchen. Getting
rid of the old leaking and pitted faucet adds appeal and restores that new feel. It's
another one of those everyday use items that get noticed most. You're most likely
going to use the faucet so why not make it nice.

Countertops - Countertops make a big difference when sprucing up your kitchen. They
will be a bit more involved and more expensive than the other options but the impact
can be tremendous. The choice in materials and colors are vast and can easily be
chosen to compliment the color scheme you are after. Material choices are slate,
granite, marble, tile, laminates, simulated stone, concrete, metal and wood.

Sink - If you are doing a new counter top now would be a good time to consider a
new sink. Undermount sinks are very nice and easier to keep clean than the
conventional type sinks that mount on top of the counter top.

Lighting - Lighting can control the mood of your kitchen. Accent lighting, flood
lighting, spot lighting and general lighting can be used to enhance your spruced up
kitchen to another level. Under cabinet lighting is one of the most effective accent
lighting features you can have. Can lights or hi-hats are good sources of light that can
be strategically placed in the ceiling for maximum effect. Different fixtures have
different uses if you're not sure what to use I can help you decide.

Flooring - A new floor in your kitchen will absolutely change the landscape of your
kitchen. Like counter tops the choice in materials for you kitchen floor is vast. Wood,
laminate, tile, granite, marble, slate, linoleum and epoxy are some choices to choose
from when considering a new floor.

Cabinet doors - You can order new cabinet doors and for some kitchens it's just a
matter of removing and replacing and you're off to the next project. New cabinet
doors are a great way to spruce up a kitchen. You should make sure you're cabinet
boxes are in good shape and can accomodate sizes of the new doors before you
consider this option. If you're considering a kitchen spruce up give me a call or click the link at the bottom
of the page.

Kitchen Remodeling
Unlike sprucing up your kitchen remodeling your kitchen is a total redo. Whole kitchen
remodels include different aspects of construction. Some situations exist when
remodeling kitchens. As a contractor I would need to know what you are doing. Are
you adding more floor space and/or ceiling height? Are you altering walls and/or
removing walls to redesign the interior? All remodels involve removing the existing
kitchens down to the existing framing and removing the insulation. Some kitchen jobs
are big enough to involve the services of an architect. For example when adding
square footage to the house an architect will be needed to draw up specs and pull
permits and check if a variance is needed.

There's an advantage to removing all the old down to the framing. This is a good time
to inspect for behind the wall damages. Like leaks, faulty wiring, faulty plumbing, faulty
framing and insect damage. You may even find old fire damage. Some old homes are
out of code and need to be brought up to code or the utilities have reached their
lifespan and need to be replaced. It's a great time to find any problems that may exist
and address them properly.
