Apartments
There are several reasons why some people might consider having an apartment built
in there home. The most obvious would be to gain extra living space. Whether or not
some one chooses to gain extra income from their apartment is all up to the home
owner. You might need the extra room for your parents, relatives, kids or friends.
Apartments can be built in an attic, basement, a cottage, a garage or a loft. They can
be upstairs or side by side. Providing you are already zoned for a two family dwelling
you shouldn't have any problems getting your apartment built. If you are not you
might need assistance from a lawyer to help with the zoning.
Building Codes
Building and fire safety codes must be followed when building an apartment. Some
municipalities require hard wired smoke and CO2 detectors. Some might require a
sprinkler system. Two options of egress are usually the norm where ever you go. That
means two escape routes unblocked and direct access to the exterior of the building.
Usually a basement should have an outside entrance and an egress window. This
requires a window large enough for an adult to fit through and easily escape if need
be.
Utilities
There are a few things you need to figure out when building an apartment. One of
them is the Utilities. Where are you going to get the power from. What kind of
heating system? Will it have central A/C? Are you using oil or gas? Where is the
plumbing going to be? These factors may have an affect on how you design the layout
of the apartment.
Finishes
What materials will you use to finish the apartment? The main controlling factor is
your budget. For example wood floors throughout the entire place will cost a lot
more than peel and stick Linoleum tile. What kind of cabinets and the size of the
kitchen should be considered. The type of fixtures in the bathroom can vary in price
also.
